A new face for
Swiss brain research.
The Schweizerische Hirnliga has supported brain research since 1995 and brings its findings back to the public. The new site brought a few firsts with it — under the bonnet.
Visit the site →Design from one house,
build from another.
The design came from source.ch; our task was the technical implementation. That split works when both sides talk early and often — and it means the finished site has to hold up against a design that was drawn without regard for what is convenient to build.
A travel bag, not
the whole wardrobe.
Only what the page needs
The site loads, for each individual page, only the data that page actually requires. Like a travel bag packed fresh for every trip instead of dragging the whole wardrobe along every time.
TYPO3 14 from the start
Built on the current major version rather than upgraded into it later — which is the cheaper moment to do it, and the only one where nothing has to be untangled first.
A lean codebase
The approach kept the code slim and the loading times down. Performance here is not a tuning exercise at the end but a consequence of how the thing was put together.
Fewer bytes,
shorter waits.
For an organisation financed entirely by private donations, an efficient site is not a technical detail — every franc spent on infrastructure is one that did not go into research.

Founded in 1995, the Hirnliga supports brain research in Switzerland and passes scientific knowledge on to the public. It is financed entirely by private donations and publishes the magazine «das Gehirn» four times a year.
hirnliga.chA design drawn,
but not yet built?
Bringing someone else's design to life is its own discipline — and it goes better the earlier the two sides meet.
What else
we work on.
